ALERT: CDC Issues Alarming Warning on Flu Epidemic

Every year people debate whether to get a “flu shot” or take their chances in contracting the virus. This year those who chose not to get the vaccination are playing with a virus that is proving to be worse than in years past.

Dr. Daniel B. Jernigan, director of the Influenza Division in the National Center for Immunization & Respiratory Diseases at the Center for Disease Control, explained on Good Morning America that this year’s flu strain not only peaked earlier but has risen to epidemic levels.

“The virus was able to start circulating in time so that, when folks went home for Thanksgiving, or they went home for Christmas, they were able to transmit it to the folks that they’re with,” Jernigan said.

Dr. Jernigan also said that this year’s strain of influenza included more cases of H3N2 Influenza A. This strain of influenza is very serious and extremely hard to contain.

“Whenever [H3N2] shows up, it causes lots of disease, lots of hospitalizations, lots of cases and lots of deaths,” he said.

As of December 31, 2017, high numbers of severe influenza cases have been reported in 33 states.

And while the flu vaccine is the best bet against getting the flu, it is less effective against the H3N2 Influenza A strain. So, the best bet against contracting the flu this season – and especially the H3N2 Influenza A strain – is to eat right, get regular exercise, get the flu shot and live a healthy lifestyle.
