We have all experienced it at one time or another, and it can stop us in our tracks – Heartburn. Heartburn will ruin your day and suck the fun out of life. Now comes news that some of the common remedies for heartburn could be very dangerous to our health.
Dr. Joseph Mercola, the chairman of the Department of Family Practice at St. Alexius Medical Center outside of Chicago, explains that side effects from some of the more popular prescribed and over-the-counter heartburn medications pose a significant risk to our health.
The use of these heartburn medications – or proton pump inhibitors (PPIs) – has been found to cause serious side effects including heart attack, chronic kidney disease, and increases in the possibilities of pneumonia and bone fractures.
In addition to these negative side effects, the use of PPIs can result in B12, magnesium, and iron deficiencies. Deficiencies in each of these levels have serious impacts on our health, and especially to our hearts.
Some of the more popular PPIs include Prilosec, Nexium, and Prevacid to name just a few. All of these medications are now sold over-the-counter where before they rightly needed a prescription. Even then, many doctors are needlessly prescribing PPIs to patients when they don’t need them.
For those who experience frequent heartburn sometimes a simple change in diet can put out the fire. Foods that promote heartburn include carbonated drinks, citrus fruit, tomatoes, chocolate and fried foods. Caffeine, alcohol, and aspirin have also been found to contribute to the cause of heartburn.
There are many all-natural ways to combat heartburn, and these avenues are always preferable to pharmaceutical remedies. Altering our diet to restore a natural balance of stomach acids is key, and that can be done without having to take the “purple pill.”
