Most of us move through our days with little discomfort. We can function, doing our jobs, working around the house and otherwise transversing our days with little to no pain. But when we suddenly start to suffer from joint pain even the simplest tasks can be excruciating.
As our bodies age, we lose the ability to maintain and lubricate our joints. This is when we start to develop pain upon movement. Additionally, unnecessary joint stress, poor nutrition, and overexertion during exercise can also cause joint pain. But we can all do some very simple things to take care of our joints.
Dr. Brian Dixon, the executive director of the Linus Pauling Institute, explains that by embracing four simple things we can all work towards taking better care of our joints.
First on the list of things to do to achieve ongoing joint health is to strengthen certain muscle groups. One can achieve this by walking, stretching, swimming or cycling. Anything that keeps you physically active promotes joint health.
Second is to maintain a healthy diet. Eating foods high in Omega-3 fatty acids, antioxidants and Vitamin D contributes to joint health. All of these nutrients that can specifically support healthy joint lubrication and cartilage.
Then we must consider the issue of maintaining a healthy weight. Those of us who are overweight put undue stress on our joints solely for the fact that we carry additional weight. Executing a healthy diet that allows us to maintain a healthy weight is critical to joint health.
Lastly, Dr. Dixon suggests boosting your nutrition with supplements like glucosamine. Many supplements we can access without a prescription work to promote healthy joints and proper joint lubrication.
These are four easy ways to maintain joint health. Incorporating these measures into our lifestyles will give us the best chance for a life full of pain-free movement as we advance in years.
