Essential Oils Used For Common Cold And More

As we emerge from one of the worst flu seasons in recent history, we would be wise to prepare for the next one. And one of the ways many people have found to combat the viruses and ailments associated with flu is by utilizing essentials oils.

The fact of the matter is this: essential oils can be used in a plethora of ways to ward off the symptoms of colds and flu. While it is important to understand what oils do what, and which aren’t safe for ingestion, when used correctly essential oils can play a big part in keeping us healthy.

Thyme Oil
Thyme oil is known for its antibacterial properties, but it is also a potent antiviral. Its germ-killing capabilities are so strong it is used as an active ingredient in many commercial green cleaning products.

Ginger Essential Oil
Ginger essential oil is useful during cold and flu season because of its mucus-clearing properties. Whether you ingest it as a tea additive or apply it topically, ginger oil relieves congestion and aids in clearing the throat and lungs of mucus.

Peppermint & Eucalyptus Oils
You can create a “steam bath” that includes peppermint and eucalyptus essential oils. By mixing these oils in a bowl with steaming water and inhaling the vapor with a towel covered head, congested airways and sinuses can be relieved.

Other essential oils that can help you through the flu season include:

  • Tea Tree Oil – An antiviral against H1N1 and decongestant
  • Lemon Oil – A natural disinfectant and immune booster, it also clears mucus and phlegm,  and is an antiviral

Essential oils that can help with dry skin associated with cold and flu season include:

  • Patchouli Oil – Regenerates new cells and improves cracked dry skin
  • Jasmine Oil – Calms irritations and promotes youthful skin. It is also an anti-inflammatory
  • Lavender Oil – Helps to repair cracked, dry skin by nourishing and hydrating
  • Almond Oil – Protects from UV damage and reduces inflammation.

Additionally, there are several essential oils you can take for a sore throat (be sure to follow directions carefully):

  • Lime Oil
  • Cardamom Oil
  • Cinnamon Bark Oil
  • Oregano Oil

There seems to be no end to what essential oils – when used correctly – can do to ward off the dreaded cold and flu. Again, an all-natural avenue is always the best avenue to take. When we can keep from using pharmaceutical and chemicals, our bodies are better suited to use its own defenses to overcome illness.
