Medical Marijuana Can End The Opioid Epidemic

There can be no denying that there is an opioid crisis in the United States. The popular prescription pain medications are extremely addictive, and yet they are widely prescribed, thus facilitating addiction. But there is an alternative, and it’s one for which big Pharma doesn’t necessarily care.

A recent landmark study by the National Academies of Science, Medicine & Engineering concluded that there is strong evidence cannabis (medical marijuana) is effective in treating chronic pain. This is information that big Pharma doesn’t want you to consume because it has the potential to cut into their profits.

Given the information coming out of this study – and in multiple studies over recent years, we can see a trend developing: cannabis replacing prescription opioids for patients who require pain management.

Even more threatening to big Pharma is this. Research indicates that cannabis is not only superior role in treating pain, but it is effective in treating opioid addiction itself. Non-psychoactive cannabinoid CBD (one of at least 113 active cannabinoids identified in cannabis) could be used as a so-called “exit drug” to help people release themselves from opioid addiction. This component of cannabis is also effective in treating addictions to many habit-forming pills and even heroin.

“Opioid addicts have a lot of neurological inflammation, which we believe is driving the addictive cycle,” said Jeff Chen, director of UCLA’s new Cannabis Research Initiative. “We see in preliminary studies that cannabinoids can reduce neurological inflammation, so cannabis could be directly addressing the inflammation in the brain that’s leading to opioid dependency.”

Research is pointing, increasingly,  to the benefits of medical marijuana. This information proves its overwhelming superiority in the face of the destructive nature of opioids. This understood one doesn’t have to spend too much time contemplating why big Pharma wants to keep the benefits of cannabis a secret: profits.
